Minerals & Healthy Hormones

If you’ve been struggling with PMS, painful periods, heavy flow, low energy, mood swings, or infertility—and you feel like you’ve tried everything, the missing piece that you probably haven’t looked at yet is minerals.

I talk about minerals often, but I realized recently that I didn’t have a dedicated place where I explained why they matter so much for your hormones. So let’s fix that.

Because here’s the truth: you cannot have truly healthy hormones without adequate mineral support.

Why Minerals Matter More Than You Ever Realized

First things first: minerals and vitamins are not the same.

Your body cannot make minerals on its own. You must get them from food or supplements. And thanks to depleted soil, chronic stress, and modern environmental toxins, most women today are walking around with mineral deficiencies, whether they realize it or not.

Yes, even if you eat “pretty healthy.”

Add in stress (which burns through minerals rapidly), toxin exposure, and years of hormonal birth control, and it becomes very easy for your body to get depleted.

From working with hundreds of clients and reviewing countless HTMA tests (Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis), I can tell you this with confidence:

👉 Mineral depletion is far more common than mineral excess.

And that depletion directly impacts your cycle, fertility, mood, energy, and overall hormone balance.

The Key Minerals That Support Healthy Hormones

These first four minerals I’m going to cover are called macro minerals. They’re the most abundant in your body and have the biggest impact on hormone health.

  1. Calcium
  2. Magnesium
  3. Sodium
  4. Potassium

1. Calcium

Calcium does much more than support bones.

When it comes to hormones, calcium helps:

  • Support placenta development

  • Regulate blood sugar

  • Influence headaches and migraines

  • Work alongside magnesium to manage cramps

Low or imbalanced calcium can contribute to painful periods, blood sugar crashes, and fertility challenges.

2. Magnesium

Magnesium is involved in over 300 processes in the body—and stress burns through it quickly.

It supports:

  • PMS symptoms

  • Inflammation control

  • Detox pathways (especially liver support)

  • Bowel regularity

  • Reproductive organ function

If you deal with cramps, bloating, constipation or diarrhea around your cycle, anxiety, or poor sleep, magnesium is almost always part of the root cause.

3. Sodium

Sodium often gets a bad reputation, but adequate sodium is critical for hormonal health.

It helps:

  • Maintain proper hydration and blood pressure

  • Reduce risk of endometriosis

  • Lower PCOS risk

  • Improve pregnancy outcomes when optimized before conception

Low sodium can also impair digestion by reducing stomach acid, which then affects nutrient absorption—creating a ripple effect throughout the body.

4. Potassium

Potassium is one of the most commonly depleted minerals I see in my clients.

It plays a major role in:

  • Getting thyroid and insulin hormones into your cells

  • Supporting blood pressure and heart health

  • Managing insulin resistance

  • Regulating fluid balance

  • Supporting fertility and progesterone production

Chronic stress and long-term birth control use are big contributors to potassium depletion.

Without enough potassium, hormones may be present—but they can’t effectively enter your cells to do their job.

The Often-Overlooked Mineral: Copper

Copper is a micro mineral, but its impact on mood and hormones is massive.

Balanced copper supports:

  • Thyroid health

  • Energy levels

  • Emotional stability

Excess copper, on the other hand, is associated with:

  • Severe PMS

  • Anxiety and depression

  • Mood swings

  • Negative self-talk

  • Endometriosis

  • Infertility and implantation failure

Birth control frequently disrupts copper balance, which is why I pay close attention to this mineral during HTMA interpretations.

If you feel emotionally “on edge,” wiped out, or overwhelmed by PMS, copper imbalance may be part of the root cause.

Why Mineral Balance Affects Your Period

Your menstrual cycle doesn’t exist in isolation.

Minerals influence:

  • Ovulation

  • Progesterone production

  • Thyroid function

  • Blood sugar regulation

  • Inflammation

  • Bloating

  • Cramping

  • Energy levels

Everything is connected.

When minerals are off, your hormones struggle to regulate properly and that shows up as painful, heavy, irregular, or emotionally intense cycles.

This is exactly why mineral testing is a foundational part of my Period Makeover Solution program. Every single client I work with gains clarity from their HTMA results—and I’ve yet to meet someone who felt it wasn’t worth it.
