You Don't Have to Wait a Year: What You Can Do for Your Fertility After Just 3 Months of Trying
Did you know that fertility guidelines already recommend earlier evaluation for many women — sometimes at 6 months, sometimes sooner — depending on age and health history? The “just wait a year” advice you keep hearing isn’t actually a hard rule. It’s the default answer, not the only answer.
If you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a few months without success, you’ve probably heard the same advice over and over again:
“Just keep trying.”
“Relax.”
“Come back after you’ve been trying for a year.”
That advice can leave you feeling helpless. Every month that passes without a positive pregnancy test feels heavier than the last. You start wondering if something is wrong with you or your partner. You want answers, but it feels like you’re expected to simply wait.
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to.
Why So Many Women Believe They Have to Wait a Year
If you’ve talked with your primary care provider or OB-GYN after only a few months of trying, there’s a good chance you’ve heard some version of “keep trying” or “come back after a year.” For many couples, that’s the standard experience — and it gets repeated so often, by providers, friends, and online forums, that it starts to sound like an absolute rule.
It isn’t. It’s a general starting point for when insurance-covered fertility workups typically begin — not a statement that nothing useful can be learned before then.
If you’ve believed this too, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common misconceptions I hear from women in my virtual fertility practice.
How This Myth Could Be Delaying the Family You're Dreaming About
The hardest part about believing this myth isn’t the waiting. It’s believing you’re powerless while you wait.
When you assume nothing can be done until a year has passed, you miss the chance to uncover information that could make a real difference much sooner — what’s happening with your hormones, your ovulation, your nutritional status.
Could something as simple as low progesterone, weak ovulation, estrogen dominance, or a nutritional imbalance be part of the picture? It’s possible. And if it is, waiting another nine months before investigating doesn’t bring you any closer to an answer.
There are many areas we can begin working on at virtually any point in a fertility journey. There’s rarely a benefit to assuming everything is fine simply because you haven’t hit a specific date on the calendar.
The Truth About the One-Year Rule
Here’s something I wish every woman trying to conceive knew: your body doesn’t flip a switch at the twelve-month mark. If there’s an underlying hormone imbalance, ovulation issue, or nutritional factor affecting your fertility, it was very likely present before you got there.
The difference isn’t time. The difference is having a practitioner who knows where to look and how to investigate what’s happening beneath the surface.
In my virtual telehealth fertility practice, we don’t believe you need permission to seek answers. If you’ve been trying to conceive for three months or more without success, we’re ready to dig deeper — gathering meaningful information about your body instead of guessing, so you can move forward with clarity instead of uncertainty.
Imagine knowing what’s actually happening with your hormones instead of wondering every month. Imagine understanding what your body needs instead of hoping it works itself out. That kind of clarity changes everything.
What You Can Do Instead
Instead of waiting and wondering, consider investing in functional fertility support — support that gives you targeted, strategic next steps instead of guesswork.
Inside my Fertility Maximizer program, we work through my Take Charge Fertility Framework one step at a time. Each week focuses on one foundational area of hormone health that supports fertility.
We also use two forms of testing to uncover what’s going on:
- Fertility Nutrition Testing (HTMA): helps identify nutritional factors that may be affecting your fertility.
- Full-cycle hormone mapping: tracks your hormones across an entire menstrual cycle rather than relying on a single snapshot.
Together, this helps us identify concerns like:
- Estrogen dominance
- Low progesterone
- Weak ovulation
- Cycles where ovulation isn’t happening at all
Once we know what’s going on, we build a targeted plan that addresses root causes instead of hoping things improve on their own — so you gain answers sooner, make informed decisions sooner, and can start addressing what may be standing in the way of pregnancy sooner.
For so many women, that’s incredibly empowering. Instead of feeling stuck, you finally feel like you’re moving forward.
You Might Be Wondering…
“Will my insurance cover this type of support?”
In most cases, no. Because this is functional fertility support, it’s typically an out-of-pocket investment — though many women use HSA or FSA funds to help cover the cost.
It’s an investment, but many clients find it’s one of the most valuable ones they’ve made in their fertility journey, because of the clarity they gain about their own bodies. Rather than spending month after month wondering what’s wrong, they get targeted information that helps them make strategic decisions moving forward.
You Don't Have to Spend the Next Nine Months Waiting
You are not powerless just because you haven’t been trying for a full year. The one-year guideline doesn’t mean there’s nothing worth investigating before then.
There are meaningful steps you can take today to better understand your fertility, uncover potential root causes, and start supporting your body in a way that’s aligned with your goals.
If you’re ready to stop wondering and start learning what your body is trying to tell you, I’d love to help.
